Bronc Saddle | The saddle used by saddle bronc riders; it lacks a horn and has free-swinging stirrups. |
Bull Riding | A roughstock event where the contestant rides a bucking bull. |
Bull Rope | A flat braided rope used in bull riding to help the rider stay mounted on the bucking bull. |

Flagman | The official who uses a flag to signify the end of the contestant's time, either when the run is complete or the contestant failed to complete the run. |
Flank strap | A padded strap that is tied around an animal’s flank area before it is released into the arena; it encourages bucking. |
Go-round | A single round of competition where each contestant gets one attempt in their event. |
Hazer | The cowboy who helps keep the steer running straight for the steer wrestler. |
Hooey | The half-hitch knot used by calf ropers to secure the calf’s legs after being roped and the legs have been wrapped with the piggin string. |
Judge | Scores rides and enforces rules, ensuring a fair and consistent competition. |
Pickup man | Assists the bronc riders in safely dismounting and helps control livestock. |
Piggin’ String | The rope used to tie the calf’s legs together in tie-down roping. |
Producer | The individual or entity responsible for the overall organization and execution of the rodeo. |
Re-ride | A second chance offered to a roughstock rider if the stock doesn’t perform properly. |
Rodeo Clown | Also known as a barrelman, is a performer who entertains the crowd and uses a large padded barrel as a distraction and for safety during bull riding. |
Rodeo Secretary | Handles entries, results, payouts, and official paperwork. |
Rope | A thick, strong cord made by twisting several small strands of nylon, polyester, or grass. A rope is used by the contestants to catch the calf or steer in certain events. |
Roughstock Events | Events won by the highest score, i.e., bull riding and bareback, and saddle bronc riding. |
Rowel | The circular, notched, bluntly pointed, freewheeling disk at the end of a spur. |
Saddle Bronc Riding | A roughstock event where the contestant uses an association approved saddle and rein to ride a bucking horse. |
Steer Wrestling | A timed event where a contestant jumps from a horse to a running steer and wrestles it to the ground. |
Stock contractor | The person or organization that provides livestock for the rodeo. |
Team Roping | A timed event where two contestants work together to rope a steer; one ropes the head and the other ropes the heels. |
Tie-Down Roping | A timed event where a contestant ropes a calf, dismounts, and ties three legs. |
Timed Events | Events that are scored on the fastest time, i.e., team roping, tie-down roping (also called calf roping), barrel racing, breakaway roping and steer wrestling. |
